Small Businesses Struggle to Survive

Mangra-Dutcher wrote this piece when COVID-19 was just emerging into our world. She reached out to small business owners around Johnston as well as employees to see how they were being affected by the restrictions that were put into place. This piece meant a lot to her to write as it was a time when everyone was isolated from each other and she got the chance to look beyond herself to see how COVID-19 was affecting others.

Writing this piece clarifies the concerns that our community had made Mangra-Dutcher's voice feel important. She had the power to help people around the community understand what was happening. This was a learning experience because she had to take initiative to find the right sources to make sure the story was written as best as it could be.

This was the first ever editorial Mangra-Dutcher had written. She got to learn how to share her opinion professionally through her writing all while calling the district to action with her words. This experience improved her writing ability and professionalism because it made her dive into the true meaning and effectiveness of words.

Students held a Black Lives Matter protest and Mangra-Dutcher was able to capture some photos of the event. She got to dive into the investigative side of reporting as she discovered who organized the event. This story taught her a lot about how to handle herself in a first-hand setting with a powerful moment that she had to report rather than join.
